Blog #7 Caring
Prior to reading the article and watching the video care has always been an important word in my life and as a youth worker. Immediately when the word care was mentioned my mind would connect it to how I would care for others and make sure they were okay, such as talking to them or making sure everyone else had everything they needed. Caring is watching other people achieve their goals and making progress in their lives and you being happy for them is part of caring. I've been taught that what other people do for you is the meaning of caring.
After Thoughts
After watching the video and reading the article I came to realize that "Caring" is so much more. I feel that many of us tend to care for others so much we forget how to care for ourselves. While we should still care for others we shouldn't forget to take care of ourselves both physically as well as mentally. Caring is so much more than what others do for you. Caring means accepting a person for who they are, creating time and valuing that time with one another. As a youth worker it is important to remember that caring means listening and really hearing what people have to say especially the youth. I know for my personal life this is something i struggled with, with adults was not being listened to or not being heard and blown off which made me scared to use my voice until well recently really.
This quote resonated with me because it brought me back to middle school and beginning of high school and made me look back on how I cared for my friends then compared to how I would and do care for them now. Did I care for them differently cause of their the color of their skin even if we did it unwillingly. What were things I did right and what are things I could do better. Sometimes still today teachers are causing harm because they aren't educating themselves of how they can care for all their students not just a group of students thrown together, but rather individually.
